Trigger Point Therapy and Acupuncture

Updated: Aug 2, 2019

Trigger Point Therapy/Dry Needling & Acupuncture Techniques

Dry needling/ trigger point therapy uses solid fine needles which are inserted into muscle tissue to release over-active muscles and provide pain relief. Trigger points are tight bands of muscle tissue that can cause pain and myofascial pain pathology syndrome.

Acupuncture refers to traditional Chinese medicine of inserting needles into tissue to affect the ‘chi’ or energy flow through the body. Some traditional points are used by podiatrists such as Bafeng points to help settle neuropathic (nerve) pain but most of the time podiatrists use needling to release trigger points.

Dry needling can be useful for conditions such as tendinitis/ tendinopathy, sore over-worked muscles andplantar fasciitis. It can be used to help relieve neuropathic and arthritic joint pain.

Low level laser therapy can also be used to treat myofascial pain syndrome/ trigger points.
